Measuring & Marking

Accurate work starts with accurate measurement. A bezel a fraction of a millimetre too wide lets a stone rattle; a shank marked short comes out the wrong size. This collection covers the measuring and marking tools that take the guesswork out of the bench — sliding and digital calipers, ring sticks and gauges, dividers, and scribes for setting out cleanly on metal.

Brass and stainless calipers read stone diameters, wire gauge and sheet thickness to a tenth of a millimetre; marked ring sticks size a finished ring or true a shank back to round; spring dividers step off repeatable spacings for rivets and piercing. Buy once, measure for years. For how to get the most from them, read our guide to measuring at the bench and the jeweller’s wire gauge guide, and pair with a ring or bracelet mandrel.
