When a pendant needs a generous bail, standard bail-making pliers run out of jaw. These carry two large oval mandrels — 12 × 8 mm and 9 × 6 mm — so every loop you form comes off the tool the same shape and size, whether you are hanging one statement piece or making a run of matched components. Pair them with our wire gauge guide when choosing stock for heavier bails.

The steel jaws are smooth and non-tapered, so silver, gold and copper wire wraps without picking up marks, and the box joint holds the jaws in line under repeated forming. Cushioned grips take the sting out of a long bail-making session.

  • Forms two distinct oval loop sizes: 12 x 8 mm and 9 x 6 mm.
  • Smooth, non-tapered steel jaws prevent marking or scratching soft metals.
  • Strong box-joint construction keeps the jaws perfectly aligned whilst shaping wire.
  • Comfortable, cushioned grips reduce hand fatigue during repetitive bail-making tasks.
  • Suited for forming non-ferrous wires, including silver, gold, and copper.

Who it's for

Common questions at the bench

UK or US sizing?
Our steel ring mandrels carry both UK alphabetical and US numerical scales unless the product specifically notes UK-only or US-only in the description. Hardwood and aluminium mandrels are unmarked — use a separate ring sizer to measure.
Can I hammer directly against the mandrel?
Steel mandrels yes — that is what they are designed for. Hardwood mandrels are for forming and finishing only; hammering against them dents the wood and marks the workpiece. Aluminium mandrels: light planishing only, no forging.
What is a stepped mandrel for?
Stepped (tiered) mandrels let you work batches of rings or bangles in fixed standard sizes — useful for production work where you are making matched pairs or a series. Tapered mandrels suit one-off resizing where you need every size in between.
How do I store it without rust?
Wipe with a light camellia or 3-in-1 oil after wet work or polishing, then store in a dry drawer or wall rack. A small silica gel pack in the drawer is cheap insurance against humidity in unheated workshops.
