Free-forming a run of tiny bails by eye rarely ends with a matched set. These pliers fix the shape for you: one jaw forms a 4.5mm × 3.5mm oval for small bails, the other a 3.2mm × 2.5mm oval for fine links — the sizes that suit earring wires and pendant connections. Wrap, release, repeat, and every loop matches the last.

The polished steel jaws are smooth, so fine-gauge gold and silver wire forms without picking up marks, and the box joint keeps everything aligned under repeated pressure. Cushioned teal grips give the control that delicate, small-scale wirework asks for — a sound tool for bench jewellers, wire artists and students.

  • One jaw forms a 4.5mm × 3.5mm oval loop for small bails.
  • The opposing jaw forms a smaller 3.2mm × 2.5mm oval loop for fine links.
  • Smooth, polished steel jaws prevent marring of soft precious metal wires.
  • Box joint construction maintains jaw alignment under repeated pressure.
  • Cushioned, teal-coloured grips provide control during delicate work.

Common questions at the bench

UK or US sizing?
Our steel ring mandrels carry both UK alphabetical and US numerical scales unless the product specifically notes UK-only or US-only in the description. Hardwood and aluminium mandrels are unmarked — use a separate ring sizer to measure.
Can I hammer directly against the mandrel?
Steel mandrels yes — that is what they are designed for. Hardwood mandrels are for forming and finishing only; hammering against them dents the wood and marks the workpiece. Aluminium mandrels: light planishing only, no forging.
What is a stepped mandrel for?
Stepped (tiered) mandrels let you work batches of rings or bangles in fixed standard sizes — useful for production work where you are making matched pairs or a series. Tapered mandrels suit one-off resizing where you need every size in between.
How do I store it without rust?
Wipe with a light camellia or 3-in-1 oil after wet work or polishing, then store in a dry drawer or wall rack. A small silica gel pack in the drawer is cheap insurance against humidity in unheated workshops.
