Common questions at the bench

Can I measure ring size on it?
Only if this product's description says it is marked with a size scale, and then in the sizing standard it names. UK ring sizes are letters, so convert a numbered size with a ring size chart. A mandrel with no size scale is for shaping, not measuring: check the size with a ring sizer or a marked mandrel.
What should I shape the ring with?
A rawhide, nylon or wooden mallet moves the ring round the mandrel without thinning the metal, so use one for shaping and truing. A metal hammer stretches and thins the band and can mark it: use one only on a steel mandrel this product's description says takes hammer work, with light blows, and only to stretch the band or to set crisp corners and edges on a shaped mandrel.
How do I keep the shape even?
Work round the ring a little at a time rather than in one spot, and check it often. If the mandrel tapers, take the ring off now and then and put it back on the other way round, so the band does not take on the taper. On a shaped mandrel, keep each side or corner of the ring lined up with the matching face.
How should I look after it?
Wipe it clean after use and store it dry, where it will not knock against other tools. Keep the working surface free of nicks, dents and grit, because any mark on the mandrel can press into the inside of the ring. A light film of oil on a bare steel mandrel helps keep rust away; wipe it off before you work.
