Precisely size rings for the US market with this robust metal mandrel, ideal for bench and retail tasks.

What it does

This solid metal sizing stick allows for accurate measurement of US ring sizes, from half to full sizes, with clearly engraved lines. Its precisely tapered body ensures rings slide on smoothly for measurement, while the dull, non-reflective finish minimises glare under workshop lighting. The flared handle provides a comfortable and secure grip, essential for consistent application during sizing operations.

How to use it

  • Select the correct US size marking.
  • Slide the ring onto the mandrel for measurement.
  • Wipe clean after use to maintain markings.

Who it's for

Bench jewellers, silversmiths, and ring makers creating or resizing for US clients will find this indispensable. It replaces guesswork and replaces less precise methods, ensuring accurate fits for both custom orders and customer adjustments in a retail setting.

Common questions at the bench

UK or US sizing?
Our steel ring mandrels carry both UK alphabetical and US numerical scales unless the product specifically notes UK-only or US-only in the description. Hardwood and aluminium mandrels are unmarked — use a separate ring sizer to measure.
Can I hammer directly against the mandrel?
Steel mandrels yes — that is what they are designed for. Hardwood mandrels are for forming and finishing only; hammering against them dents the wood and marks the workpiece. Aluminium mandrels: light planishing only, no forging.
What is a stepped mandrel for?
Stepped (tiered) mandrels let you work batches of rings or bangles in fixed standard sizes — useful for production work where you are making matched pairs or a series. Tapered mandrels suit one-off resizing where you need every size in between.
How do I store it without rust?
Wipe with a light camellia or 3-in-1 oil after wet work or polishing, then store in a dry drawer or wall rack. A small silica gel pack in the drawer is cheap insurance against humidity in unheated workshops.
