This steel punch stamps a crisp 5.0 mm five-pointed star design onto metal and leather, perfect for maker's marks.

What it does

Strike this tool with a hammer to impress a sharp, 5.0 mm five-pointed star into your chosen material. The punch features a precisely milled striking face, ensuring a clean impression every time. Forged from 60 HRC hardened steel, it maintains its definition through repeated use on softer metals and leather without deforming. The comfortable, round shank provides control for accurate placement on your workpiece.

How to use it

  • Position punch firmly on your material.
  • Strike squarely with a suitable hammer.
  • Clean punch after use for longevity.

Who it's for

This punch is essential for jewellers, silversmiths, and leatherworkers needing to add a distinct maker's mark or decorative element. Ideal for hobbyists and professionals alike, it replaces hand-engraving for simpler designs or complements intricate work, streamlining the finishing process on blanks and smaller components.

Common questions at the bench

What metal does this punch work on?
Our steel letter, number, and design punches are heat-treated to strike non-ferrous metals: silver (sterling, fine), copper, brass, bronze, aluminium, gold. Striking hardened steel will damage the face. For pewter and very soft alloys, use light strikes.
What size impression do I need?
1–2 mm for ring shanks and small pieces (initials, hallmark-style); 3–4 mm for pendant backs and signed plaques; 5 mm+ for presentation pieces and stamped jewellery components. Bigger is not always better — a clean small mark reads better than a struggle with an oversized one.
What do I strike it with?
A 1–2 lb brass mallet on a polished steel bench block. Do not use a steel hammer — it will deform the punch over time. One firm strike beats two soft ones for a clean impression.
How do I keep the punch sharp?
Polished punches stay sharp for thousands of strikes if you are hitting cleanly on a flat block. If the face starts blurring impressions, polish lightly with 600-grit emery, then a buffing mop on a polishing motor. Replace before the face deforms further.
