Compound curves are where flat-stake work stops and this tool starts. One end carries synclastic profiles for dishing metal in on both axes; the other is anticlastic, for saddle forms where the curves oppose. Graduated radii along each end let you creep up on a form instead of forcing it in one pass — the heart of raising and holloware and vessel work.

The stake is hardened steel with highly polished working faces, so the surface it gives back to the metal is clean and mark-free. The central hexagonal block locks into a bench vice without rotating. Oil it lightly against rust, and keep hammer faces off the polished surfaces.

  • Double-ended design offers both synclastic and anticlastic forming surfaces.
  • Manufactured from hardened steel for durability whilst working precious metals.
  • Highly polished working faces ensure a clean, mark-free finish on your piece.
  • Central hexagonal block provides a secure, non-slip grip in a bench vice.
  • Features multiple graduated curves on each end for forming a variety of radii.

Who it's for

A core tool for UK silversmiths, jewellers, and coppersmiths engaged in raising and forming holloware. Also suited for metal artists and restorers requiring precise control over complex, compound curves in non-ferrous metals.

Common questions at the bench

How do I hold it?
If it has a shank or central block, grip that firmly in a bench vice or stake holder so it cannot turn or move under the hammer. If it has its own base, stand or holder, set that flat and firm on a solid part of the bench.
Which hammer should I use on it?
If this product's description names what to strike it with, use that. Otherwise a mallet, or a hammer with a clean, smooth face. Strike the metal, not the stake: a blow that lands on the stake itself can dent or scratch it, and the mark will then print into the work.
Will it mark my work?
A clean, smooth stake leaves the metal clean; any scratch, dent, rust or grit on it prints into the work. Check this product's description: if it says a working surface needs dressing or polishing, do that before using it on work where the finish matters.
How should I look after it?
Wipe it clean and dry after use and store it where its working surfaces cannot knock against other tools. A light wipe of oil on bare steel helps prevent rust in a damp workshop; wipe it off before you form finished work.
