Which face is for which job?
This product's description names its faces and what each is for. As a general guide, a flat face flattens, planishes and sets rivets, a domed or ball face forms, stretches and textures, and softer faces such as brass or nylon move and settle metal with less marking than steel.
Will it mark my work?
A face prints whatever is on it into soft metal. Keep the faces clean and smooth, strike squarely so the edge of the face does not dig in, and use no more force than the job needs. Where a finished surface must stay unmarked, use a softer face such as nylon, or a mallet.
What should I support the work on?
A steel bench block or anvil for flattening and riveting, a mandrel or stake for curves, and a sandbag or rubber block where the work needs some give. Stand the support on a solid part of the bench.
How should I look after it?
Wipe the head clean after use and store the hammer dry, where its faces cannot knock against other tools. Smooth out any nick or dent in a face before using it on finished work. Before each session, check the head is tight and, on a hammer with screw-in heads, that the head is screwed fully home; never use a hammer with a loose head.
