Master intricate metal shaping and repoussé with this versatile double-ended mallet, designed for controlled strikes without surface damage.

What it does

This essential bench tool delivers two distinct striking surfaces for precise metal manipulation. The firm plastic face is ideal for initial shaping and texturing, while the softer rubber face offers a gentler touch for refining delicate details and ensuring no marring. Its balanced, polished metal head, fitted with a turned hardwood handle, provides comfortable control for repetitive tasks, making it indispensable for detailed forming work on softer metals.

How to use it

  • Select the appropriate head for your metal and desired outcome.
  • Strike the metal with controlled, deliberate blows.
  • Clean heads after use to maintain their integrity.

Who it's for

Made for UK bench jewellers, silversmiths, and metalsmiths engaged in repoussé, chasing, or general forming. It's also an excellent choice for wire-workers and hobbyists seeking a reliable, non-marking hammer to replace harsher alternatives for detailed metal manipulation.

Common questions at the bench

What is it for?
Check this product's description for the jobs it is made for. In general, a soft-faced mallet or hammer, with a face such as nylon, plastic, wood, rubber or brass, moves, trues and flattens metal with less marking and stretching than a steel hammer: for example truing a ring or bangle on a mandrel, closing a bezel, flattening sheet or wire, or shaping metal over a stake or into a block.
Will it mark my work?
It marks much less than a steel hammer, but any face can still leave a mark if there is grit, filings or a burr on the face or on the work, or if the rim of the face digs in. Keep the face clean and smooth and strike squarely.
Can I strike punches or stamps with it?
Only if this product's description says so. The small, hard end of a steel punch, stamp or chisel can dent or cut a nylon, plastic, wooden or rubber face, and a damaged face will then mark your work.
How should I look after it?
Wipe the faces clean after use and keep them free of grit, filings and polishing compound. Store it dry and away from heat. If a face becomes chipped, cut or rough, smooth it, or replace it if this product's faces are replaceable, before using it on finished work.
