What is it for?
Check this product's description for the jobs it is made for. In general, a hard, flat face is the support for flattening, planishing, stamping and riveting, and horns, grooves, domes and other shaped surfaces are for bending and forming curves, wire and strip.
How do I stop it moving or ringing?
If this product can be clamped or screwed down, as its description says, fix it in place. Otherwise stand it on the most solid part of the bench; a rubber block or a filled sandbag underneath deadens the noise and helps stop it creeping.
Will it mark my work?
Whatever is on the face prints into soft metal when you strike it. Keep the face clean and free of grit and filings, and avoid striking it with a hammer or punch when there is no work on it, as dents and scratches will show in your work. A face that is not polished can leave its own surface finish on soft metal. If this product's description says it can be turned over to a rubber or wooden face, use that face for work the metal face would mark.
How should I look after it?
Wipe it clean and dry after use. A light wipe of oil on bare steel or iron helps prevent rust in a damp workshop; wipe it off before working on finished pieces. Keep any wooden or rubber part dry and away from solvents.
