For jewellers forming contemporary hexagonal bangles, this wooden mandrel is the correct tool for the job. It provides a stable, six-sided former to maintain flat faces and sharp corners when working with hexagonal wire or stock, a task impossible on a standard round mandrel.

Key features

  • Solid hexagonal profile with six flat forming faces.
  • Crafted from smooth-sanded hardwood to prevent marring soft metals.
  • Maintains crisp corner angles and geometry when hammer-forming hexagonal stock.
  • Full 14-inch length provides an ample working surface for various bangle sizes.
  • All stock is held in the UK, ready for same-day dispatch.

Who it's for

A specialist tool for UK silversmiths and bench jewellers creating contemporary hexagonal-profile bangles and bracelets. Also suitable for craftspeople forming hexagonal shapes from copper, brass, and other non-ferrous metals who need to preserve a sharp, geometric profile during shaping.

Common questions at the bench

UK or US sizing?
Our steel ring mandrels carry both UK alphabetical and US numerical scales unless the product specifically notes UK-only or US-only in the description. Hardwood and aluminium mandrels are unmarked — use a separate ring sizer to measure.
Can I hammer directly against the mandrel?
Steel mandrels yes — that is what they are designed for. Hardwood mandrels are for forming and finishing only; hammering against them dents the wood and marks the workpiece. Aluminium mandrels: light planishing only, no forging.
What is a stepped mandrel for?
Stepped (tiered) mandrels let you work batches of rings or bangles in fixed standard sizes — useful for production work where you are making matched pairs or a series. Tapered mandrels suit one-off resizing where you need every size in between.
How do I store it without rust?
Wipe with a light camellia or 3-in-1 oil after wet work or polishing, then store in a dry drawer or wall rack. A small silica gel pack in the drawer is cheap insurance against humidity in unheated workshops.
