This 9-inch solid steel wax reamer accurately sizes wax ring tubes from 3mm to 17mm for lost-wax casting.

What it does

This tool precisely enlarges and smooths the bore of wax ring tubes, ensuring a perfect fit for your casting sprues. Its five ground steel flutes cut cleanly through wax, leaving a smooth finish that minimises post-casting cleanup. The continuous taper allows for gradual, controlled sizing without damaging delicate wax models. The solid steel construction provides the necessary rigidity for consistent results, preventing flexing during use.

How to use it

  • Select appropriate tube for your project.
  • Gently twist the reamer clockwise into the wax tube.
  • Clean flutes regularly for optimal performance.

Who it's for

An indispensable tool for bench jewellers, silversmiths, and jewellery students preparing wax models for lost-wax casting. It streamlines the process of sizing ring tubes, replacing the need for multiple mandrels and junior saws for initial sizing.

Common questions at the bench

UK or US sizing?
Our steel ring mandrels carry both UK alphabetical and US numerical scales unless the product specifically notes UK-only or US-only in the description. Hardwood and aluminium mandrels are unmarked — use a separate ring sizer to measure.
Can I hammer directly against the mandrel?
Steel mandrels yes — that is what they are designed for. Hardwood mandrels are for forming and finishing only; hammering against them dents the wood and marks the workpiece. Aluminium mandrels: light planishing only, no forging.
What is a stepped mandrel for?
Stepped (tiered) mandrels let you work batches of rings or bangles in fixed standard sizes — useful for production work where you are making matched pairs or a series. Tapered mandrels suit one-off resizing where you need every size in between.
How do I store it without rust?
Wipe with a light camellia or 3-in-1 oil after wet work or polishing, then store in a dry drawer or wall rack. A small silica gel pack in the drawer is cheap insurance against humidity in unheated workshops.
