For bails and links with an oval section rather than the usual round — a small change that gives wire components a distinct visual character. The two fixed jaw sizes, 7.5 × 5mm and 6 × 4mm, are non-tapered, so every loop formed on them repeats exactly: matched pairs and production runs come out identical.

Polished steel jaws shape wire without marring silver or other soft precious metals, a box joint holds the jaws in alignment through the squeeze, and a double-leaf spring returns the tool smoothly between bends to keep hand fatigue down. The teal cushioned grips stay comfortable through repetitive work, and stock is held in the UK for same-day dispatch.

  • Forms consistent oval loops in two sizes: 7.5 × 5mm and 6 × 4mm.
  • Box-joint construction ensures jaw alignment and smooth, reliable operation.
  • Double-leaf spring provides a smooth return action to reduce hand fatigue.
  • Polished steel jaws shape wire without marring soft or precious metals.
  • Teal-coloured cushioned grips offer comfort and control during repetitive work.

Common questions at the bench

UK or US sizing?
Our steel ring mandrels carry both UK alphabetical and US numerical scales unless the product specifically notes UK-only or US-only in the description. Hardwood and aluminium mandrels are unmarked — use a separate ring sizer to measure.
Can I hammer directly against the mandrel?
Steel mandrels yes — that is what they are designed for. Hardwood mandrels are for forming and finishing only; hammering against them dents the wood and marks the workpiece. Aluminium mandrels: light planishing only, no forging.
What is a stepped mandrel for?
Stepped (tiered) mandrels let you work batches of rings or bangles in fixed standard sizes — useful for production work where you are making matched pairs or a series. Tapered mandrels suit one-off resizing where you need every size in between.
How do I store it without rust?
Wipe with a light camellia or 3-in-1 oil after wet work or polishing, then store in a dry drawer or wall rack. A small silica gel pack in the drawer is cheap insurance against humidity in unheated workshops.
