Sinking domes is bread-and-butter forming work, and this block keeps the whole job on one piece of steel. Its 22 polished, hemispherical depressions handle doming in silver, copper and brass sheet, while the flat faces take general forming and flattening work. If domes and beads are new territory, our guide to dapping and doming walks through the sequence.

Milled from a solid block of steel, it sits dead flat and shrugs off repeated heavy hammer blows. The profiled cut-outs along the sides give your off-hand something to hold and stop the block creeping across the bench mid-strike. A sensible first block for students and apprentices, and a space-saver for working silversmiths who would rather keep one tool out than five.

  • Milled from a solid block of steel to withstand repeated, heavy hammer blows.
  • Combines multiple polished, hemispherical depressions for doming with flat sides for general forming.
  • Profiled side cut-outs provide a secure grip and prevent shifting on the bench during use.
  • Suitable for forming non-ferrous metals including silver, copper, and brass sheet.

Common questions at the bench

How do I form a dome?
Anneal (soften) the metal first. Set the disc or blank on a cavity, choose a punch that fits that cavity and strike lightly while moving the punch round. Work the dome in stages through the cavities, with a punch that fits each one, until it has the depth and shape you want, annealing again if the metal becomes hard to move.
Which punch fits which cavity?
Use a punch smaller than the cavity, leaving room all round for the thickness of the metal. A punch that is too large pinches the metal against the edge of the cavity, which marks the dome and can damage the punch and the block.
Will it mark my work?
Grit, filings or scratches in a cavity or on a punch head print into the dome. Keep the cavities and punches clean and smooth, use punches that fit, and strike squarely rather than hard.
How should I look after it?
Wipe the block and punches clean after use and store them dry, where the cavities and punch heads cannot knock against other tools. Keep anything made of wood away from water and pickle.
