This hardwood oval mandrel is your essential bench partner for shaping and forming bracelets with precision.

What it does

Hammering malleable metals like silver, copper, and brass against this solid, smooth hardwood surface allows you to create and refine oval bangle shapes. The continuous taper offers a versatile range of diameters on a single tool, making it ideal for both new constructions and straightening existing pieces. Its substantial length provides ample room for working larger designs. The dense wood construction ensures a non-marring finish, protecting your metalwork from unwanted marks during forming operations.

How to use it

  • Secure the mandrel firmly in your vice or on your bench.
  • Position your metal over the desired taper and strike with a mallet.
  • Rotate the bracelet to maintain an even oval form.

Who it's for

A fundamental tool for bench jewellers and silversmiths, this mandrel is equally valuable for students learning forming techniques and experienced craftspeople. It streamlines the process of creating consistent oval bangles, replacing the need for multiple individual formers and simplifying the correction of warped pieces.

Common questions at the bench

UK or US sizing?
Our steel ring mandrels carry both UK alphabetical and US numerical scales unless the product specifically notes UK-only or US-only in the description. Hardwood and aluminium mandrels are unmarked — use a separate ring sizer to measure.
Can I hammer directly against the mandrel?
Steel mandrels yes — that is what they are designed for. Hardwood mandrels are for forming and finishing only; hammering against them dents the wood and marks the workpiece. Aluminium mandrels: light planishing only, no forging.
What is a stepped mandrel for?
Stepped (tiered) mandrels let you work batches of rings or bangles in fixed standard sizes — useful for production work where you are making matched pairs or a series. Tapered mandrels suit one-off resizing where you need every size in between.
How do I store it without rust?
Wipe with a light camellia or 3-in-1 oil after wet work or polishing, then store in a dry drawer or wall rack. A small silica gel pack in the drawer is cheap insurance against humidity in unheated workshops.
