A hammer for the point where lighter chasing hammers stop moving the metal. Common questions at the bench

Which face is for which job?
This product's description names its faces and the work each one is for. As a general guide, a flat or gently bowed face planishes and flattens; a domed or ball face sinks, stretches and forms curves; and a cross peen or narrow face moves metal in one direction or sets a line. Strike steel letter or design stamps only with a hammer this product's description says is for stamping: their hard ends can nick a polished face, and the nick then prints into your work.
Will it mark my work?
A steel face prints whatever is on it into soft metal, so keep the faces clean and smooth and strike squarely: a blow that lands on the rim of a face, or one harder than the job needs, leaves dents. Where the surface must stay unmarked, use a soft face such as nylon or wood instead.
What should I support the work on?
Use a surface that suits the job and sits firm: a steel bench block or anvil for flattening, planishing, riveting and stamping; a stake, mandrel or forming block for curves; and a sandbag, rubber block or chasing pitch where the work needs some give, as in chasing and repoussé.
How should I look after it?
Wipe the head clean after use and store the hammer dry, where its faces cannot knock against other tools. A nick or scratch on a face prints into the metal, so smooth it out before using the hammer on finished work. If the head is fitted to a handle, check it is tight before use and never use the hammer with a loose head. On hammers with screw-in faces or tips, tighten the face fully before striking.
