The reference tool for ring work: check a band against the engraved US 1–16 scale with its half-size markings, true a shank that has gone oval, or form new work directly on the taper. Solid steel gives it the mass and rigidity to take real hammer blows without deflecting — the quality our guide to choosing a ring mandrel tells you to look for first.

The working surface is hardened, smooth and evenly tapered, so rings glide on and off without marring, while the knurled steel handle keeps your grip certain mid-strike. At 13 inches overall there is room to work the metal and read the scale at the same time.

  • Machined from solid steel for essential weight and rigidity when hammering.
  • Engraved with US ring sizes 1 to 16, with clear markings for half sizes.
  • Knurled steel handle provides a secure, non-slip grip during forming operations.
  • Smooth, hardened, and tapered working surface allows rings to glide on without marring.
  • Measures 13 inches in total length, providing ample space for working.

Common questions at the bench

UK or US sizing?
Our steel ring mandrels carry both UK alphabetical and US numerical scales unless the product specifically notes UK-only or US-only in the description. Hardwood and aluminium mandrels are unmarked — use a separate ring sizer to measure.
Can I hammer directly against the mandrel?
Steel mandrels yes — that is what they are designed for. Hardwood mandrels are for forming and finishing only; hammering against them dents the wood and marks the workpiece. Aluminium mandrels: light planishing only, no forging.
What is a stepped mandrel for?
Stepped (tiered) mandrels let you work batches of rings or bangles in fixed standard sizes — useful for production work where you are making matched pairs or a series. Tapered mandrels suit one-off resizing where you need every size in between.
How do I store it without rust?
Wipe with a light camellia or 3-in-1 oil after wet work or polishing, then store in a dry drawer or wall rack. A small silica gel pack in the drawer is cheap insurance against humidity in unheated workshops.
