When a claw-set stone has to come out — for a re-tip, a stone replacement or a full reset — levering the prongs with whatever is nearest invites a chipped girdle. These pliers keep the job under control: the grooved tip engages each claw and lifts it away from the stone, while the flat, tapered opposing jaw braces against the setting. A small tool that makes routine repair work considerably calmer.

The construction is stainless steel throughout, so flux splashes and workshop damp will not mark the jaws. Double-leaf springs return the handles smoothly between lifts, and the curved vinyl grips keep your hold steady through slow, deliberate work. Wipe the tips after use so the groove keeps its bite.

  • Specialised jaw profile features a grooved tip to securely engage and lift claws.
  • Opposing flat, tapered jaw provides a stable counter-surface against the setting.
  • Stainless steel construction offers strength and corrosion resistance in the workshop.
  • Double-leaf springs provide a consistent return action for controlled, repetitive use.
  • Curved, non-slip vinyl grips offer comfort and control during delicate operations.

Common questions at the bench

How do I close or lift a setting without damaging the stone?
Work a little at a time and check the stone after each step; when closing a setting, work opposite sides in turn. Use gentle, even pressure, place the jaws as this product's description shows, and do not force the setting in one go.
Will these mark the setting?
Any jaw can mark soft metal or a polished finish if you grip too hard or the jaws are dirty, and serrated or textured jaws mark more easily than smooth ones. Use the lightest grip that holds the piece and keep the jaws clean; on finished or plated work, cover metal jaws with masking tape or use nylon-jawed pliers.
How should I look after them?
Wipe them clean after use, keep them dry and store them so the jaws do not knock against other tools. Keep the moving parts free of grit and filings so the action stays smooth, and do not use them as a hammer or a lever.
