Re-tipping and stone replacement both start the same way: lifting a prong without scratching the stone or skidding off the setting. These pliers are shaped for exactly that — the lower jaw cradles the setting while the upper jaw engages the prong, so the lift is levered and controlled rather than pried and hopeful. A staple of repair work at the bench.

Box-joint construction keeps the 5.3mm jaws parallel under load with no twist, and the satin steel finish avoids glare under the bench light while resisting corrosion. Red PVC handles give grip and quick identification. At 130mm the tool stays close to the work, where prong adjustments belong.

  • Specially shaped lower jaw cradles the setting whilst the upper jaw lifts the prong.
  • Box-joint construction keeps jaws parallel and prevents twisting during use.
  • Bright red PVC-coated handles provide a comfortable, non-slip grip.
  • Satin-finished steel construction resists glare and corrosion at the bench.
  • Compact 130mm length offers excellent control for delicate adjustments.

Common questions at the bench

How do I close or lift a setting without damaging the stone?
Work a little at a time and check the stone after each step; when closing a setting, work opposite sides in turn. Use gentle, even pressure, place the jaws as this product's description shows, and do not force the setting in one go.
Will these mark the setting?
Any jaw can mark soft metal or a polished finish if you grip too hard or the jaws are dirty, and serrated or textured jaws mark more easily than smooth ones. Use the lightest grip that holds the piece and keep the jaws clean; on finished or plated work, cover metal jaws with masking tape or use nylon-jawed pliers.
How should I look after them?
Wipe them clean after use, keep them dry and store them so the jaws do not knock against other tools. Keep the moving parts free of grit and filings so the action stays smooth, and do not use them as a hammer or a lever.
