Batch consistency is the quiet skill in wirework: fifty jump rings are only as good as their sameness. These stepped steel mandrels give you fixed diameters to wind against, so coils, jump rings and decorative elements come off the rod matching, batch after batch.

Each of the two mandrels carries five stepped cylindrical sections, machined from solid steel that won't flex or compress as wire tension builds. The smooth red handles are comfortable to hold and quick to spot on a busy bench, and between the pair you have a useful spread of small forming diameters for findings and chain work.

  • Machined from solid steel to prevent compression or flexing under wire tension.
  • Each mandrel features five stepped, cylindrical sections for forming various coil diameters.
  • Supplied as a 2-piece set to cover a wider range of wire forming needs.
  • Smooth, cylindrical red handles provide a comfortable grip and easy identification.

Who it's for

An essential forming tool for UK bench jewellers, silversmiths, and wire artists creating their own findings or chain. Also suitable for model makers and hobbyists who require consistent, small-diameter coils from wire.

Common questions at the bench

UK or US sizing?
Our steel ring mandrels carry both UK alphabetical and US numerical scales unless the product specifically notes UK-only or US-only in the description. Hardwood and aluminium mandrels are unmarked — use a separate ring sizer to measure.
Can I hammer directly against the mandrel?
Steel mandrels yes — that is what they are designed for. Hardwood mandrels are for forming and finishing only; hammering against them dents the wood and marks the workpiece. Aluminium mandrels: light planishing only, no forging.
What is a stepped mandrel for?
Stepped (tiered) mandrels let you work batches of rings or bangles in fixed standard sizes — useful for production work where you are making matched pairs or a series. Tapered mandrels suit one-off resizing where you need every size in between.
How do I store it without rust?
Wipe with a light camellia or 3-in-1 oil after wet work or polishing, then store in a dry drawer or wall rack. A small silica gel pack in the drawer is cheap insurance against humidity in unheated workshops.
