Batch consistency is the quiet skill in wirework: fifty jump rings are only as good as their sameness. These stepped steel mandrels give you fixed diameters to wind against, so coils, jump rings and decorative elements come off the rod matching, batch after batch.

Each of the two mandrels carries five stepped cylindrical sections, machined from solid steel that won't flex or compress as wire tension builds. The smooth red handles are comfortable to hold and quick to spot on a busy bench, and between the pair you have a useful spread of small forming diameters for findings and chain work.

  • Machined from solid steel to prevent compression or flexing under wire tension.
  • Each mandrel features five stepped, cylindrical sections for forming various coil diameters.
  • Supplied as a 2-piece set to cover a wider range of wire forming needs.
  • Smooth, cylindrical red handles provide a comfortable grip and easy identification.

Who it's for

Common questions at the bench

How do I make jump rings with it?
Wind the wire round the mandrel in tight, even turns, each touching the last, keeping the same tension throughout. If the mandrel has a slot or hole at the tip, use it to hold the wire end as you start. Slide the coil off and cut through it along its length, with a jeweller's saw or flush cutters, to free the rings.
What wire can I use?
If this product's description names a wire type or thickness, stay within it. Soft (annealed) wire winds more evenly and with less effort; harder wire springs back, so its rings come out a little larger than the mandrel.
How do I get matching rings?
Wind every coil for a batch on the same mandrel or step, with the same wire and the same tension. Change the mandrel, the step or the wire and the rings change size too.
How should I look after it?
Wipe the mandrels clean after use and keep them dry. If they came with a case, keep them in it, so the forming surfaces do not knock against other tools and pick up nicks that would mark the wire.
