A hobby rotary tool (the kind in a DIY drawer) has the motor in your hand — it's bulky, buzzy and tiring for fine work. A pendant motor hangs the motor above the bench and drives a slim handpiece through a flexible shaft, so your hand holds almost nothing. That balance is the whole point: better control for stone setting, cleaner drilling, less fatigue over a long session. A foot pedal leaves both hands free.
What to look for
- Torque over top speed: low-speed grunt matters more than a high RPM number — you want it to keep cutting under load without stalling.
- Handpiece type: a quick-change or key-type chuck that takes standard 2.35 mm and 3 mm shanks covers almost every burr and wheel.
- Forward/reverse and a decent foot pedal for fine speed control.

The motor is only as useful as what you put in it.
