Etching bites a design into metal with acid or salt, leaving a raised line or a sunken field you can darken or fill. It suits silver, copper and brass, and needs little kit. It also needs respect: this is chemistry, so we will treat safety as part of the method, not an afterthought.
Transferring your design
Everything in etching comes down to the resist — the coating that protects the metal you want to keep, while the bare metal gets eaten away. So the first job is to put your design onto clean, degreased sheet. Wipe the metal with acetone or a cream cleaner and stop touching the face; fingerprints are grease, and grease is a resist you did not plan.
There are three common routes. Toner transfer irons a laser print, or press-n-peel film, onto the metal, and the black toner becomes the resist. You can draw straight onto the surface with a resist pen or a permanent marker. Or you can coat the whole sheet and scratch your lines through it with a steel scriber, so only the scratched lines etch. Applying the resist
Whatever the etchant cannot eat will work as a resist: nail varnish, asphaltum, baked-on toner, or two coats of permanent marker. Brush or draw it on and let it dry hard before it meets the bath.
The back and edges matter as much as the front. The etchant attacks every bare surface it can reach, so cover the reverse with wide packing tape or a solid coat of varnish, and seal the edges too. A single pinhole becomes a pit. For a fine line-etch, lay down a full even coat, let it cure, then open your lines cleanly through it with the scriber — a sharp point gives a crisp line the etchant can follow.
Choosing an etchant
Ferric chloride is the workhorse for copper and brass. It comes as a solution or as crystals you dissolve, it is only mildly acidic, and it does not throw off the harsh fumes strong acids do. It stains everything a rusty brown, so keep it to its own corner. It etches silver poorly, so it is not the tool for that job.
Saline electro-etching is the gentler route, and the better one for silver. A salt-water bath and a low-voltage DC supply etch the metal by electrolysis rather than raw acid — far kinder chemistry, though it still produces a little gas and sludge, so ventilate. Traditional nitric acid etching works, but the fumes and burns put it beyond the home bench, and we do not recommend mixing it. For most makers the choice is simple: ferric chloride for copper and brass, electro-etching for silver.
Timing, agitation and the bite
Suspend the piece in the bath face down where you can, hanging it from a loop of tape so the metal that loosens falls away and the lines stay crisp. If you etch face up, brush the surface gently or rock the bath now and then. Agitation and a little warmth speed the bite and keep the walls clean; a still, cold bath undercuts the resist and blurs your detail.
Check progress every ten to fifteen minutes with plastic or wooden tweezers — never metal. A typical bite runs thirty to sixty minutes depending on strength, temperature and how deep you want to go. Stop before the acid creeps sideways under the resist and collapses fine lines; deeper is not always better.
Neutralising, disposal and safety
Treat this stage as the main event, not the tidy-up. Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection, cover your clothes, and work with a window open or extraction running — even the safer methods give off gas. Keep no metal containers or tools anywhere near ferric chloride; use glass or plastic, because bare metal contaminates the bath and reacts.
When you are done, neutralise spent etchant by stirring in baking soda a little at a time until it stops fizzing. Do not pour ferric chloride down the drain. Used solution is loaded with dissolved copper, a heavy metal, so raise the pH with washing soda to drop the copper out as a solid, let it settle, decant the water, and take the residue to a household hazardous-waste point. Using the etched sheet
Lift the resist with acetone or the maker’s remover, and wash the piece well. You now have a textured sheet to work as you like: oxidise it and rub the high points back so the recesses read dark, fill the sunken field with enamel or resin, or simply polish the raised design proud.
