Pick up a standard pair of pliers, close them slowly, and watch the jaws: they meet at the tip first and stay angled through most of the stroke. That pivot is fine for holding, but it concentrates pressure at a single point — it digs into wire and bends sheet unevenly. How they're different

Parallel jaws stay parallel through the entire closing stroke. A box or toggle linkage moves the whole jaw face evenly, so the grip pressure spreads along the full length of the jaw instead of pinching at the tip. The result is a firm, even hold that doesn't twist or mar your work, and flat bends that land exactly where you place them. When you actually need them

  • Straightening wire and stock — the flat faces draw kinks out smoothly without leaving a row of dents.
  • Holding work steady for filing, sawing or setting without it rotating or springing free of the jaws.
  • Even, repeatable bends in sheet and heavier wire, where a standard plier's angled jaws would bend one part more than another.
  • Gripping flat or fragile components across their whole width rather than at a single stress point that could crease them.

What they don't replace
