Once your saw strokes are steady, the blade stops being a way to cut shapes out and becomes a way to draw. Piercing — cutting a design from the middle of sheet — gives you fretwork panels, silhouette pendants and lace-light openwork. The technique is mostly about order of operations, and that is learnable.

Transfer the pattern with a glue stick

Work the design out on paper at actual size, printed or drawn with a fine pen. A thick line is ambiguous at the saw, so decide now whether you cut on the line, just inside it or just outside, and hold to that for the whole piece. This guide assumes the sawing itself is in order — if it is not, start with how to use a jeweller's saw and come back.

Fixing the template could not be simpler: rub an ordinary glue stick thinly over the back of the paper, press it onto clean, degreased sheet and burnish it flat from the centre outwards so no wrinkles or air pockets remain. Give it ten minutes to dry. After cutting, the paper soaks off in warm water. For geometric designs, scribe borders and centre lines directly with dividers and a square from the measuring & marking tools — a scribed line cannot lift the way a paper edge can.

Drill every interior hole first

Interior cuts need a way in, and that means pilot holes. While the sheet is still whole and flat — fully supported, easy to hold — centre-punch each waste area and drill a hole of around 1mm, one for every window in the design. Place each hole just inside the waste, near a corner of the shape rather than in the middle: you reach your line sooner and steer less.

Cut the interior first, the outline last

This is the rule that keeps delicate work alive. The surrounding sheet is both handle and support: while the fragile interior cutting happens, the design stays embedded in metal big enough to grip, sliding flat over the slot of a hardwood bench pin. Saw the outline first and you throw that support away. So: interior windows first, working roughly from the centre of the design outwards, and the silhouette last of all.

Threading up becomes second nature. Release the top clamp of the frame, leave the blade gripped in the bottom clamp with teeth facing out and pointing down towards the handle, pass the free end up through a pilot hole with the pattern side up, then re-clamp and tension until the blade pings when plucked. A frame that tensions quickly earns its keep — with a 4¼-inch saw frame you will repeat this dozens of times in one panel. Slack re-tensioning is also the commonest reason blades break mid-pierce; if that sounds familiar, read why saw blades snap. Keep a couple of blade sizes to hand — coarser for long runs, finer for detail — in a saw blade storage organiser rather than squinting at teeth to tell 2/0 from 4/0.

Turning tight corners

Curves are sawn by turning the work, not the saw. Keep the frame stroking vertically on the spot and rotate the sheet into the blade with the holding hand. For a sharp interior corner, resist swinging round in one motion: saw into the corner along the first line, then keep the blade stroking in place with no forward pressure while you slowly turn the sheet — the blade clears a tiny circle of kerf, and you carry on down the second line with the point still crisp.

On very acute corners it is cleaner still to saw into the point from both directions and let the waste fall free. Corners are where designs are lost, and almost always through hurry; the fuller treatment is in sawing tight curves in silver sheet.

Clean the edges while the sheet still braces them

Sawn edges want needle files, and the time to use them is before the outline is cut, while every fragile element is still braced by the surrounding sheet. Match file to shape: square and three-square files sharpen interior corners, half-round and barrel shapes follow concave sweeps, and a round file trues drilled circles. File on the push stroke, held flat through each window so the crisp face of the sheet stays crisp. Interior edges are unusually visible — light passes through openwork, and a whiskery edge reads at arm's length. The habits are the same as any edge work; see filing technique for clean edges. Go gently beside narrow bridges: a few strokes too many, taken from each side, can halve their width.

Design so it cannot fall apart

A pierced design is what remains, so everything that remains must stay connected — to the outline, and ideally to more than one neighbour. Sign-writers meet the same problem in stencil letters: the counter of an O drops out unless a tie holds it. Before sawing anything, shade every waste area on your pattern and hunt for islands. Any floating element needs a bridge, and every bridge needs the width to survive — in 0.8mm sheet, keep bridges a millimetre wide or more, short and straight in preference to long and sweeping.

Draw bridges fatter than you think you need. They lose width to the saw kerf on both sides, then again to the files, and a bridge that fails on the final cut takes the whole design with it. Start with a handful of generous windows and add fineness piece by piece, rather than betting a weekend's sawing on lace.
