A forming mandrel for bangles and bracelets, tapering from 38mm to 76mm along its 15-inch length — the full adult size range on one stake. True up a soldered bangle, planish out hammer marks or bring a cuff to a consistent oval against a surface that does not move. The same thinking applies to rings: see our guide to choosing a ring mandrel.

Cast iron supplies the mass to sit still under hammer work, while the hollow core keeps the overall weight manageable when you move it. The working surface is smooth and polished, so silver, copper and other soft metals come away unmarked. A sensible early buy for a student workshop, too.

  • Tapered from 38mm to 76mm to accommodate the full range of adult bangle sizes.
  • Heavy cast iron construction provides the necessary mass to stay put on the bench.
  • Features a smooth, polished surface to help prevent marring of silver, copper, and other soft metals.
  • The 15-inch length gives ample space for forming, shaping, and planishing work.
  • Hollow-core design maintains rigidity whilst managing the overall weight for easier handling.

Who it's for

An essential forming tool for UK bench jewellers and silversmiths who regularly produce bangles and bracelets. Also ideal for jewellery students and craftspeople setting up a workshop with core forming stakes.

Common questions at the bench

What should I shape the bangle with?
A rawhide, nylon or wooden mallet moves the metal round the mandrel without thinning or marking it, so use one for shaping and truing. A metal hammer stretches and thins the metal and can mark it, and it dents a wooden mandrel, whose dents then press into your work. Use one only on a cast iron or steel mandrel, and only when you mean to stretch, planish or texture the bangle.
How do I get the bangle size I want?
If this mandrel is stepped, each step is a fixed size, so bangles formed on the same step match. If it tapers, mark the point where your bangle should sit with a pencil or a strip of tape and form each one at that mark. Either way, check the size with a bangle sizer or against a bangle that fits.
How do I keep the shape even?
Turn the bangle as you work and move along it a little at a time rather than striking one spot. If the mandrel tapers, take the bangle off now and then and put it back on the other way round, so it does not take on the taper. On a shaped mandrel, keep each side or corner of the bangle lined up with the matching face.
How should I look after it?
Wipe it clean after use and store it dry, where it will not knock against other tools. Keep the working surface free of nicks, dents and grit, because any mark on the mandrel can press into the bangle. Keep a wooden mandrel away from damp and direct heat so it does not split or warp. A light film of oil on a bare iron or steel mandrel helps keep rust away; wipe it off before you work.
