The spade of the card suits, punched clean from sheet in four sizes: 18.76 × 12.52 mm, 20.11 × 15.03 mm, 26.81 × 20.04 mm and 30.16 × 22.54 mm. Blank matched pendants and tags, or cut decorative elements to solder onto larger pieces — the shearing action leaves little finishing work at the edges.

Both the 76 mm square die block and the punches are high-carbon tool steel, tempered for edge retention. Keep to non-ferrous sheet — silver, copper, brass — of 18 gauge (1.02 mm) or thinner, anneal before punching, and use a cutting lubricant; a crisp, clean shear depends on it.

  • Punches and die block are machined from high-carbon tool steel, then tempered.
  • Includes four spade punches: 18.8x12.5, 20.1x15.0, 26.8x20.0, and 30.2x22.5 mm.
  • Cuts non-ferrous sheet metal like silver, copper, and brass up to 18 gauge (1.02 mm).
  • The solid steel die block measures 76 x 76 mm (3 x 3 inches) for bench stability.
  • Slide sheet metal into the slot, insert the matching punch, and strike firmly.

Common questions at the bench

What metal and thickness can it cut?
Only the non-ferrous sheet metal this product's description names, and no thicker than any gauge or thickness it gives. Do not cut steel or any other ferrous metal: sheet that is harder or thicker than the cutter is made for can chip or blunt the punches and the die.
How do I cut a clean blank?
Anneal (soften) the sheet and put a little cutting lubricant on the punch. Stand the die block on a solid, flat surface, set the sheet in it and seat the punch with its cutting end to the metal. Strike the top of the punch squarely and firmly, with the hammer or mallet this product's description suggests if it names one; one firm, square blow gives a cleaner edge than several light or glancing ones.
Will the blank need finishing?
Check each blank. Smooth any burr or sharp edge with a file or fine abrasive paper before the piece is worn or finished, and if a blank has bowed slightly in the cut, flatten it with a mallet on a bench block.
How should I look after it?
Use it only on the sheet it is made for. Wipe the punches and die block clean after use, oil them lightly and store them dry, with the cutting edges kept from knocking against other tools. If a punch sticks, tap it back out straight rather than levering or twisting it.
