Fold Forming for Beginners

Fold forming is the fastest way I know to get a big three-dimensional shape from a flat sheet. You fold annealed metal, hammer the fold, then open it out — and the sheet has curled, rippled or grown a spine on its own. Charles Lewton-Brain worked the method out in the 1980s.

Where the shapes come from

The whole technique rests on one idea: differential stretching. When you forge the closed edge of a fold with a cross-peen, you thin that edge and make it longer. The metal behind the fold stays put. Now the edge is longer than the base it is attached to, and the sheet has only one way to resolve that — it curves. Forge harder and it curves more, until a flat strip becomes a tight scroll.

That is why fold forming feels almost like cheating. You are not raising a form over a stake, blow by patient blow. You are letting the metal move itself, and your job is mostly to feed it the right blows in the right line and then get out of the way.

The tools you actually need

This is a low-kit technique, which is part of its appeal. The one hammer that matters is a cross-peen: the wedge-shaped face drives the blow into a line along the fold, exactly where you want it. You will also want a planishing hammer for smoothing the form once it is open, and something hard to work against. A double-ended forming stake gives you both synclastic and anticlastic curves to shape over. Start with a line fold

Practise in copper before you cut into silver — it moves the same way and costs almost nothing. Anneal a strip about 0.7mm thick, fold it cleanly in half along its length, and tap the fold closed against the bench. Now forge along the folded edge with the cross-peen, working from one end to the other in an even line.

Anneal, open the fold, and look at what you have: a curl, a ruffle, the beginnings of a wave. Fold it back up, forge again, anneal again, and the curve deepens. The harder you forge along that single edge, the more the strip wants to spiral, so stop and check the shape often rather than committing to one long session at the hammer. A line fold worked hard down one edge gives you the classic fold-form leaf, especially if you let the two halves open unevenly.

The T-fold and a raised spine

The T-fold is the next step, and the one that unlocks leaves and vessels. Instead of forging the closed fold, open it out in the vice until the cross-section looks like a letter T — a flat base with a wall standing up from it. Forge the top of that standing wall. When you open the sheet out flat again, the forged wall becomes a raised ridge running down the middle, like the central rib of a leaf.

From there you can curve the whole sheet over a stake, chase in side veins, or fold and forge a second time for a busier surface. Everything in fold forming is built from these two moves and the confidence to repeat them.

Keep annealing — this is the part people skip

Fold forming work-hardens metal quickly because you are stretching it hard along a narrow line. If you do not anneal between forging passes, the fold will crack along its edge, and a crack in a fold form usually cannot be rescued. The moment the metal stops moving under the hammer, or starts to feel springy and to ring rather than thud, stop and anneal.

Shaping and finishing

Once the form is where you want it, planish the high spots over a stake to firm up the surface and even out the hammer marks. File and sand the cut edges, which the forging often leaves ragged, and then decide how you want the surface to read. One quiet benefit of all that hammering is that the finished piece ends up work-hardened and springy, so a fold-formed cuff holds its shape on the wrist far better than one simply bent up cold.

Oxidising the piece and then knocking the patina back off the high points throws the recesses of a fold form into sharp relief, which suits the technique well.
