A mirror polish is one finish, not the finish. Satin, matte and brushed surfaces hide daily wear, calm a busy form and make a polished detail sing by contrast. Here is how each surface is made, where it earns its place, and how to bring it back after a repair.

Every finish starts from a sound surface

A deliberate finish is not a way to skip finishing. Satin and matte surfaces lower reflectivity; they do not fill scratches, and a deep gouge under a brushed finish reads as clearly as it does under a mirror. So the preparation is identical: work through the abrasive grits until the surface is clean and even, exactly as set out in how to polish jewellery by hand. From there a mirror is simply one more stage — and every finish below is a deliberate step sideways instead.

Satin and brushed: lines with a direction

A brushed finish is thousands of fine parallel scratches laid in one direction; satin is the same idea with a finer, softer grain. By hand, an abrasive nylon pad — Scotch-Brite or similar — pulled in straight, full-length strokes gives a lovely satin with complete control. On the rotary handpiece, wire wheels do it faster: stainless steel wire wheels cut a brighter, more assertive line, while brass wire wheels leave a softer, warmer sheen that flatters silver.

This is the finish for pieces that live hard. A bangle or cuff straight off the hammers & forming bench will collect scratches from its first day on a wrist; on a mirror they read as damage, on a brushed surface they vanish into the grain. Wedding bands, cufflinks, anything handled daily — all candidates.

Matte and frosted: texture without direction

Matte is even and non-directional, scattering light softly the same way from every angle. The bench-classic route is pumice: a paste of fine pumice powder and water scrubbed over the metal, by hand with a toothbrush or far faster with stiff bristle cup brushes in the rotary tool. Frosted is matte's glittery cousin: a fine steel wheel run slowly with a feather-light touch flicks thousands of tiny sparkling facets into the surface. Let only the wire tips touch the work. Press harder and you burnish the frost away into a semi-bright smear.

Two-tone: polished against matte

Contrast is where these finishes earn the most. A mirror bezel rising out of a satin band, a frosted panel inside a bright frame — each finish makes the other look more intentional. The order matters: polish the entire piece first, as per the buff, mop & compound guide, because you cannot polish up to a matte edge later without licking over it.

Then mask. Lay masking or electrical tape over every area that stays bright, burnish the tape edge down hard, and work your satin or frost over the exposed zone — always stroking away from the tape edge rather than into it, which lifts it. Keeping lines straight and coverage even

Directional finishes fail by looking accidental, and they look accidental when strokes cross. Choose the grain direction — usually along a band's length, around a bangle's circumference — and never deviate. By hand, every stroke runs the full length of the surface, one way, with a light overlap. Under power, keep the wheel travelling in line with the grain at a steady speed and light pressure. Never let a wire wheel dwell: where it lingers it stops cutting and starts burnishing, leaving a bright patch that only a full redo of that face will remove.

Run wire wheels slow — a few thousand rpm on a pendant motor is plenty, and the tips actually cut better than at speed; see choosing a pendant motor if you are speccing one. Wire wheels shed wires as they wear, so safety glasses are non-negotiable. If a satin comes out harsher than you wanted, soften it with an extra-soft mounted bristle wheel and a trace of fine pumice rather than starting again.

Care, and bringing a finish back

Worn satin does not scratch — it shines. High spots slowly burnish bright with handling, so maintenance is the opposite of a polish: no polishing cloths, which flatten the grain, just warm soapy water and a soft brush, plus an occasional refresh with a nylon pad following the original direction. On copper and brass a thin coat of microcrystalline wax slows tarnish and fingermarking; sterling and gold are normally left bare and simply refreshed.

After a repair, accept that the finish is a casualty. Soldering, pickling and polishing out a joint leaves a bright ghost you cannot patch invisibly, because a directional finish redone in one small area never matches its neighbours. Refinish the whole face or panel, following the original grain — it takes minutes. Which is why it pays to note what made the finish in the first place: the tool, the grit, the direction.
