Cutting a run of matched bottle-shaped blanks with a piercing saw is slow work; this punch-and-die set shears them out in one strike apiece. Slide silver, copper or brass sheet between the two halves of the die, seat the punch in its aperture and strike it firmly — the blank drops out clean, in any of four graduated sizes from 11.46 × 17.36 mm up to 19.68 × 29.91 mm. Suits repeat pendant and earring work, and any fabrication that calls for uniform components.

Die block and punches are machined from hardened, tempered high-carbon tool steel, and the block — roughly 64 × 89 mm — sits squarely on the bench under the hammer. Keep sheet to 18 gauge (1.02 mm) or thinner, and a touch of cutting lubricant before each strike keeps the edges keen.

  • Includes four bottle-shaped punches: 11.5x17.4, 13.3x20.1, 15.9x24.2, and 19.7x29.9 mm.
  • Die and punches are machined from hardened and tempered high-carbon tool steel for durability.
  • Cuts non-ferrous sheet metal such as silver, copper, and brass up to 18 gauge (1.02 mm).
  • The solid steel die block measures approximately 64 x 89 mm (2.5 x 3.5 inches).
  • Produces clean, repeatable blanks for earrings, pendants, and other jewellery components.

Common questions at the bench

What metal and thickness can it cut?
Only the non-ferrous sheet metal this product's description names, and no thicker than any gauge or thickness it gives. Do not cut steel or any other ferrous metal: sheet that is harder or thicker than the cutter is made for can chip or blunt the punches and the die.
How do I cut a clean blank?
Anneal (soften) the sheet and put a little cutting lubricant on the punch. Stand the die block on a solid, flat surface, set the sheet in it and seat the punch with its cutting end to the metal. Strike the top of the punch squarely and firmly, with the hammer or mallet this product's description suggests if it names one; one firm, square blow gives a cleaner edge than several light or glancing ones.
Will the blank need finishing?
Check each blank. Smooth any burr or sharp edge with a file or fine abrasive paper before the piece is worn or finished, and if a blank has bowed slightly in the cut, flatten it with a mallet on a bench block.
How should I look after it?
Use it only on the sheet it is made for. Wipe the punches and die block clean after use, oil them lightly and store them dry, with the cutting edges kept from knocking against other tools. If a punch sticks, tap it back out straight rather than levering or twisting it.
