Cutting a run of matched bottle-shaped blanks with a piercing saw is slow work; this punch-and-die set shears them out in one strike apiece. Slide silver, copper or brass sheet between the two halves of the die, seat the punch in its aperture and strike it firmly — the blank drops out clean, in any of four graduated sizes from 11.46 × 17.36 mm up to 19.68 × 29.91 mm. Suits repeat pendant and earring work, and any fabrication that calls for uniform components.

Die block and punches are machined from hardened, tempered high-carbon tool steel, and the block — roughly 64 × 89 mm — sits squarely on the bench under the hammer. Keep sheet to 18 gauge (1.02 mm) or thinner, and a touch of cutting lubricant before each strike keeps the edges keen.
